What is Intent Recognition?

Intent recognition is the NLU task of identifying what a speaker wants to accomplish from their spoken or written input. When a caller says "I need to change my delivery address," the intent is "update delivery address" regardless of the exact words used.

How Intent Recognition works

Intent recognition models are trained on examples of how people express different intentions. They learn that "change my address," "update delivery location," "I moved, need to fix my shipping info" all map to the same intent. The model outputs an intent label with a confidence score. If confidence is too low, the system asks a clarifying question rather than guessing.

Why Intent Recognition matters for enterprise

Intent recognition accuracy directly determines whether calls get resolved or escalated. Enterprise deployments typically define 50 to 200 intents covering their specific use cases. The long tail of unusual requests is handled through fallback intents that route to human agents.

How ARCA handles Intent Recognition

ARCA's intent recognition works across 42 languages, handling the same intent expressed in different languages or in code switched input.
